The Lock In

Time called and doors shut. One more for the road? Every nation has their culture. Every culture has a hero. Every hero has a story. This is ours.

Set in a typical Irish bar after closing, THE LOCK IN recounts the Irish tale of Niall of the Nine Hostages, the legendary High King of Ulster.

One of the most notorious womanisers in recorded history, it is said that three million of us are descended from the man himself.

But who was he and was he the hero that Ireland has now created?

The LOCK IN challenges perceived notions of inherited power and ownership, and focuses on Ireland’s preoccupation with heritage and identity. In a country so soaked in heroic figures, where does Niall fit in to that narrative? Did Niall unite a country and a people more than they realise? Or did Ireland forge the legacy they wanted for one of their most colourful leaders?

After the doors shut, make sure you stick around for one more with the friendly locals, and witness how Niall helped shape the history of a vibrant people.

From second-generation Irish writers, directors and composers, and brought to life by an award-winning theatre company, THE LOCK IN forms part of Over The Limit’s Celtic season at VAULT 2017, alongside SIREN and THE WITCH’S MARK.

Over The Limit were formed in 2015 by Joseph Cullen and Oran Doyle with the aim of reimagining the stories and tales of the forgotten person. Male or female, alive or dead, fact or fiction, we seek to bring them to life on stage.

Through vivid new writing, contemporary original scores and dramatic stagecraft, Over The Limit aim to give a voice to those that have been forgotten in the midst of time. Central to Over The Limit’s ethos is the promotion of new and emerging talent in London and our productions have seen us work with Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, LAMDA, Rose Bruford, and Bird College to create exciting original work.

Over The Limit’s inaugural production, GENTLE TIM, premiered at VAULT 2016 and has since gone on to be developed for a full length production with runs programmed across the country.
